What irzai, is saying is very true. Crane operations are part of our daily lives. Even offshore has no exception especially those who are on a maintenance contract, work on workboats or barges. So, knowledge on rigging & slinging and also crane operations is essential. I used to operate cranes on the ship when I was a cadet but had no idea on certain issues. we only learn the basic principle of it, then operate the crane.

Now, seeing that my guys are out there working on the cranes offshore, I would like to see the company take initiative to send their Safety Officers on a crane operations course.( it's very challenging operating a crane offshore with suspended load while the vessels rocks from port to starboard and also heave from forward to aft. ) Some safety officers we have here do have crane work experience but still a refresher does no harm.

What you are saying is indeed agreed mate! Somehow its quite sad how or the direction of our safety when the CEP offered is merely 'cukup makan' or 'lepas batuk ditangga'. We don't really look or benchmark ourself on the OSH practitioners overseas or at least our neighbors nor does not foresee what are the crucial skills needed to call ourself as Competence SHO. We are so busy addressing the importance of points system, or how the penalty should be given to SHO and at the end, when WTO (World Trade Organization) hit us..... only the tough will get going ..... we still 'bising' on whether the SHO must have diploma or degree, when even Indonesia has already implemented (long time ago) on degree / diploma requirement as SHO.... issues such as HIRARC or Risk Assessment was still indeed relatively poor on understanding by safety practitioner or other necessity skills such as scaffolding, cranes, Gas Tester or even the very basic of First Aid skills was not address anywhere .... Still remember a session when I brought up to look or benchmark to Singaporean's safety practitioner (SISO) but, I was backfired by a very senior SHO who claimed that we are better then them...and sadly the crowd cheered him.... So, that's why I personally organized an Open Forum to educate our guys on scaffolding & cranes in hoping that they'll get something here.... so, your help in addressing safety issues pertaining to Cranes & Scaffolding is highly appreciated.... cheers mate....

Lets continue with the Riggers subject....

Nota:
(a) Bagi Hoisting / Gantry Crane, hanya Sijil PMA perlu diperiksa.
(b) Hanya RAKYAT MALAYSIA @ PR (Rekod dulu) dibenarkan mempunyai Sijil Pengendali Kren Kompeten

They are

1) Adakah anda tahu BERAT BARANG?
2) Adakah anda tahu JARAK / RADIUS Barang yang mahu diangkat?
3) Adakah Berat Beban yang perlu diangkat didalam spesifikasi Load Chart Kren?
4) Adakah Outriggers Kren dibuka sepenuhnya?
5) Adakah keadaan Mukabumi sesuai?
6) Adakah KESEMUA SLINGS & SHACKLES & RANTAI telah diperiksa?
7) Adakah Peranti / Peralatan berat beban Kren berfungsi dengan baik?
8) Adakah peralatan Anti Two Block berfungsi?

ENGLISH VERSION

1) Do you know the WEIGHT
2) Do you know the RADIUS
3) Is the LOAD LIFTING within the allowable CRANE LOAD CHART specification
4) Are the OUTRIGGERS FULLY EXTENDED
5) Is the GROUND CONDITION ACCEPTABLE
6) HAVE YOU CHECKED ALL SLINGS and SHACKLES, CHAINS
7) DOES the in CRANE WEIGH LOAD DEVICE READ OUT ACCURATELY
8) IS YOUR ANTI – TWO BLOCK OPERATIONAL
9) ENDEAVOUR WHERE EVER POSSIBLE TO KEEP THE LOADS AS CLOSE TO THE GROUND AS POSSIBLE
10) ARE ALL PERSONS WELL CLEAR OF THE LIFTING OPERATION?
11) PROCEED WITH CAUTION AT ALL TIMES LIFT IN PROGRESS
12) TAG LINE IN PLACE
